Spartak Defeats Alania 2-0 in Vladikavkaz

Champions Spartak Moscow began the defense of its Russian league crown with a win on Saturday, beating 1995 title holders Alania 1-0 amid tight security in Vladikavkaz.

Some 5,000 soldiers and special security forces patrolled the area around the stadium and major roads for the first official game played in the North Ossetian capital since a bomb killed more than 50 people there two weeks ago.

Every person was checked with a metal detector before being allowed in the stadium.

Spartak's Andrei Tikhonov scored in the 48th minute, beating keeper Zaur Khapov with a rising shot to a near post.

The Muscovites had the better of the play for most of the action-packed match and could have scored more.

Two other Moscow sides, Dynamo and Torpedo, also won. Dynamo came from behind for a 2-1 victory over Rotor in Volgograd, while Torpedo beat Zhemchuzhina Sochi 1-0 in Moscow.

Oleg Veretennikov, Russia's top scorer last season, put Rotor ahead in the 37th minute but goals by Rolan Gusev and Oleg Teryokhin late in the second half gave Dynamo the three points.

Vyacheslav Kamoltsev's lone goal with four minutes remaining gave Torpedo a narrow win over Zhemchuzhina.

The capital's other two teams, CSKA and Lokomotiv, drew.

Krylia Sovietov Samara ended CSKA's impressive 12-game winning streak at the end of last season with a 1-1 draw.

Also this weekend, Lokomotiv drew 1-1 at Rostselmash Rostov. The Muscovites, who host Lazio in the first leg of the European Cup Winners Cup semifinal next week, went ahead thanks to Yevgeny Kharlachyov's effort in the 13th minute but Dmitry Kirichenko equalized for Rostov shortly after the interval.
