New Interior Force Boss

MOSCOW -- President Boris Yeltsin appointed a new commander on Monday to lead the country's Interior Ministry troops, the ministry said.

Colonel General Vyacheslav Ovchinnikov, 53, replaces Pavel Maslov, who resigned Friday as head of the roughly 250,000-strong military force. Ovchinnikov also becomes a deputy interior minister.

Russia's Interior Ministry oversees both the police and the internal troops, which are responsible for maintaining peace within Russia's borders and bore much of the fighting in the country's failed 1994-96 war with separatists in Chechnya.
