Mir Gets Supplies

MOSCOW -- Russia's Progress M-41 resupply spaceship, carrying fuel, food, water and scientific research materials, has successfully docked with the Mir space station.

A television broadcast from mission control outside Moscow showed the unmanned Progress and Mir, which carries Russians Viktor Afanasyev and Sergei Avdeyev and Frenchman Jean-Piere Eniere, smoothly hooking up at 4:46 p.m. Moscow time Sunday.

Russian space officials have abandoned plans to end use of the 13-year-old station by the middle of this year and now intend to use Mir for another few years if funds allow.

However, sponsors have yet to materialize, and Russia has already complained that sending resupply ships regularly and maintaining the station is too expensive for its meager state coffers.
