Kyrgyz Premier Dies

ALMATY, Kazakhstan -- Kyrgyz Prime Minister Zhumabek Ibraimov died Sunday in the capital, Bishkek, a government spokesman said. He had been ill with stomach cancer.

Ibraimov "passed away unexpectedly after his illness," the spokesman said by telephone. First Deputy Prime Minister Boris Silayev is to take over Ibraimov's duties until a permanent replacement is found.

Ibraimov, in his 50s, had led the government of the tiny former Soviet republic in Central Asia for just three months after he took over from Kubanychbek Zumaliyev, who was fired by President Askar Akayev for failing to reverse Kyrgyzstan's economic decline.
