Kiev Expects Yeltsin

KIEV -- Ukraine expects President Boris Yeltsin to pay an informal visit on his Ukrainian counterpart, Leonid Kuchma, in late May, a senior presidential official said Wednesday.

Volodymyr Ohryzko, head of the foreign policy department in Kuchma's office, said the two leaders had agreed earlier this month on the meeting. He said the plan was confirmed during a telephone conversation the two men held Tuesday.

Ohryzko gave no details, but said the meeting was likely to focus on political and economic cooperation.

Yeltsin, who has suffered from a series of ailments since last year, was last in Kiev two years ago, when he signed a basic Russian-Ukrainian treaty on friendship and cooperation.
