Kazakhs Await Boost

ALMATY, Kazakhstan -- A boost to Kazakhstan's industry from an effective devaluation of the tenge currency would come in around two months, the head of the State Statistics Agency said Wednesday.

The agency earlier said industrial output fell 4.1 percent in the first quarter of 1999 in year-on-year terms while the trade gap widened to $301 million in the first two months from $88.3 million in January.

"I do not think that we should expect a quick change of the situation as early as in April," Zhaksybek Kulikeyev told a news conference. "But the devaluation will have a positive impact on industry in a couple of months."
