Ivanov, Albright to Meet in Norway

WASHINGTON -- Foreign Minister Igor Ivanov and U.S. Secretary of State Madeleine Albright will meet in Oslo next week to discuss the crisis in Kosovo, the State Department said Friday.

Spokesman James Rubin said Albright and Ivanov, who have been in regular contact throughout the Kosovo crisis, spoke by telephone earlier in the day and agreed on the meeting, which will be held on Tuesday.

The meeting had been under discussion before State Duma Speaker Gennady Seleznyov said that Yeltsin had ordered strategic missiles to be aimed at NATO states bombing Yugoslavia, U.S. officials said. Yeltsin later denied it.

Rubin joined other spokesmen in affirming that the United States has been assured by Moscow that Russia would stay out of the Yugoslavia conflict and had not targeted NATO countries with nuclear weapons.

The two countries "have a deep disagreement about the use of force in Kosovo" but are continuing to work on other issues where possible, he said.
