Hockey Coach Killed

MOSCOW -- Spartak Moscow's youth hockey coach Valentin Markov, 52, has been murdered.

Markov, who won the Soviet national hockey title with Spartak in 1976, was beaten with a metal bar in broad daylight Tuesday and died shortly afterward.

Post-Soviet sports have been plagued by violence, much of it thought to be related to gambling or to excise-tax breaks.

Last week, a man described as a soccer talent scout was shot dead in Volgograd, and in March a man was sentenced to 19 years in prison for the 1997 killing of Valentin Sych, the president of the Russian Hockey Federation.
