Gunmen Lead Jailbreak in Dagestan

A group of gunmen seized a courthouse in southern Russia on Monday and freed a man detained in the slaying of a top regional prosecutor, Itar-Tass reported.

It was unclear if anyone was hurt in the incident in the Kayakentsky region of the restive Russian republic of Dagestan. A local lawmaker was holding talks with the gunmen late Monday, the news agency reported.

The violence began after police on Monday detained a resident of the Kayakentsky region suspected of involvement in the killing of Kurban Bulatov, deputy prosecutor general in Dagestan's capital, Makhachkala.

Bulatov died after gunmen opened fire with automatic weapons at a car he was driving last Wednesday in what police called a likely contract killing.

After Monday's arrest, unidentified gunmen seized the regional courthouse where the suspect was being held and then seized the adjacent regional administration building, Itar-Tass said. It gave no other details.
