Chechens Free Soldier

MOSCOW -- A 19-year-old Russian soldier was freed in southern Russia on Tuesday after being held for almost two months by Chechen kidnappers, Itar-Tass reported Tuesday.

Alexander Andreyev was seized Feb. 12 in the city of Mozdok, where he had been serving in the army, Itar-Tass said.

Chechen gangs have kidnapped scores of people, many of them ethnic Russians and foreigners, since the country's 1994-6 war with Russia.

The gangs often venture into southern Russia to find their victims, which they hold for ransom. While many of the hostages have been released, dozens remain captive.
