Car Output Hits Low

TOKYO -- Auto production in Japan fell to its lowest level in 20 years for the fiscal year ending in March because of slumping sales hurt by a recession at home and throughout ailing Asia.

Production for fiscal 1998 totaled 9.97 million, down 7.5 percent from 10.78 million the year before, the trade group Japan Automobile Manufacturers Association said Monday.

The level for the year marked the first drop in three years and was the lowest for auto production in Japan since fiscal 1978, when 8.95 million vehicles were produced.
