Armenia Base Boosted

YEREVAN, Armenia -- The Russian air force chief said Wednesday that Moscow would send more fighter jets to its military base in Armenia and pledged that the buildup wasn't a threat to neighboring Azerbaijan.

A recent deployment of Russia's state-of-the-art S-300 missiles and MiG-29 fighter jets in Armenia has drawn strong protests from Azerbaijan.

The nations are bitter enemies over the disputed ethnic Armenian enclave of Nagorny Karabakh in Azerbaijan.

The Russian air force chief, General Anatoly Kornukov, who was in Armenia on Wednesday inspecting his troops, said eight MiG-29s will be deployed at the Russian base near the Armenian city of Gyumri, joining five such planes delivered earlier.
