START Debate Date Set

MOSCOW -- The State Duma agreed on Friday to debate ratification of the START II nuclear arms reduction treaty on April 2.

The lower house of parliament finally decided to consider ratifying the Russian-U.S. treaty after a long delay, mainly due to political reasons.

"This [treaty] will serve as the basis for creating an international system of collective nuclear security," the centrist Our Home Is Russia party said in a statement urging deputies to ratify the treaty.

START II, signed in 1993, sets out cuts of up to two-thirds in the number of long-range nuclear warheads deployed by the United States and Russia.
