Pacific Fleet Exercises

VLADIVOSTOK, Far East -- Russia's Pacific Fleet and the Far Eastern military district said Tuesday they had begun military exercises, but the training had not been prompted by NATO airstrikes against Yugoslavia.

Warships from the Northern Fleet started exercises earlier this week, but officials said these were planned and no measures were being taken in connection with the bombings against Russia's traditional Slavic ally.

More than 20 Pacific Fleet warships would take part in the exercises and marines, planes and infantry would land at one of the test grounds in the southern Primorye region near the Pacific port of Vladivostok, a spokesman for the Far East military district said.
