Moscow Kurds Protest

MOSCOW -- About 1,000 Kurds staged a march in Moscow on Saturday to protest the jailing in Turkey of Kurdish rebel leader Abdullah Ocalan, Interfax reported.

The demonstrators carried banners with portraits of Ocalan and waved placards branding Turkey as a "terrorist" state, Interfax said.

Vladimir Zhirinovsky, leader of the nationalist Liberal Democratic Party, told the demonstrators that the Russian parliament supported the idea of creating an independent Kurdish state.

"We will make top officials in Russia and the world pay attention to you and back you," Zhirinovsky said.
