Kiev Plans 2 Tenders

KIEV -- Ukraine's State Property Fund plans to announce two commercial tenders this year for the purchase of two 24.78 percent packages of shares in the Khartron electronic plant, officials said over the weekend.

The plant, located in the northeastern industrial town of Kharkiv, makes a variety of electronic equipment but is best known as a producer of spacecraft guidance systems, one of the largest in the former Soviet Union.

The government plans to keep 25 percent of shares in the plant, the State Property Committee said Saturday.

Meanwhile, Khartron Marketing Director Oleksandr Bek said the only way to save the plant would be selling the share packages to Khartron's Russian partners.

The Russian Space Agency and Russia's Khrunichev space scientific center have expressed interest and are conducting negotiations on taking part in the planned tenders, he said. Orders from Russia amounted to 46 percent of the plant's production in 1998.
