BERLIN -- The European Jewish Council has strengthened its presence in Central Europe by incorporating the Russian Jewish Congress during a weekend meeting, the EJC president said Monday.

The organization's executive committee will hold its next meeting Moscow in May 9 and 10 to get a stronger picture of conditions for Russian Jews, said EJC president Ignatz Bubis, who also heads the Central Council of Jews in Germany.

During its weekend meeting, the European Jewish Council also elected Vladimir Gusinsky, a prominent financier who heads the Russian Jewish Congress, as vice president.
