Holiday Divides Latvia

RIGA, Latvia -- President Guntis Ulmanis said it was a "mistake" to celebrate a controversial remembrance day for soldiers, which Jewish groups say is linked with Nazi occupation of Latvia.

Ulmanis told state radio Monday that the holiday might be phased out next year.

Parliament voted narrowly to retain March 16 as a national remembrance day that Latvian veterans of Nazi Germany's army have also observed as the day their Waffen SS unit, the Latvian Legion, was formed in 1943.
