Gagarin's Birth Marked

MOSCOW -- Cosmonauts Tuesday marked the 65th birth anniversary of Yury Gagarin, the first man in space, with a traditional ceremony at the cosmonaut training center where he lived.

"Gagarin is our symbol," said General Pyotr Klimuk, the head of the center in Star City near Moscow, who led several dozen cosmonauts to march and lay flowers at Gagarin's bronze memorial.

Gagarin's space flight on April 12, 1961, brought him worldwide fame and veneration at home that survived his death in a plane crash in 1968. Gagarin's anniversary would have gotten much fanfare during the Soviet era, but passed almost unnoticed Tuesday.
