Factory Fire Kills 4

MOSCOW -- Fire broke out in a furniture factory in St. Petersburg on Monday, creating fumes that killed four people and injured 10, according to news reports.

The fire broke out at 5 p.m., and swept through a storage area of the factory where plastic foam was kept, deputy fire chief Vladimir Karpov told NTV television news. He said workers had gone into the storage area to get their clothes, and were overcome by the fumes.

The building was formerly the site of the Positron military factory, but had been converted to civilian use as a furniture factory.
