Dagestan Votes 'No'

MOSCOW -- Voters in the troubled region of Dagestan have decided not to create a post of president for their province, Itar-Tass reported Monday.

Itar-Tass, quoting the regional election committee, said more than 65 percent of eligible voters had taken part in a elections to a local parliament Sunday. In a simultaneous referendum, nearly 70 percent voted against establishing a post of president, the news agency said.

Dagestan is a multiethnic, mainly Moslem semi-autonomous region in the Caucasus mountains neighboring breakaway Chechnya. It has been plagued by ethnic, religious, political and criminal violence for several years.
