Dagestan Poll Protests

MAKHACHKALA, Dagestan -- Several candidates filed lawsuits Tuesday in the volatile southern region of Dagestan, saying elections two days earlier were marred by irregularities.

Several candidates who ran for seats in Sunday's local legislature elections filed lawsuits Tuesday, accusing their rivals of bribing voters and other abuses.

Some results also proved an embarrassment for Dagestan authorities.

Sharapudin Musayev, a candidate who has been accused of stealing money from the pension fund, won a legislative seat by a landslide in his home village. Police have been unable to apprehend Musayev because he has been protected by his supporters in the village.

It wasn't immediately clear whether the elections would change the balance of power between numerous ethnic groups in Dagestan.
