Copter Crash Kills 2

MOSCOW -- A Russian helicopter crashed on an arctic island after an apparent engine failure, killing both crew members, officials said Tuesday.

The Mi-2 helicopter lifted off from a Russian nuclear-powered icebreaking ship on Monday, Interfax reported, citing the Emergency Situations Ministry.

About an hour later, the pilots reported strong winds and poor weather conditions, and received permission to land on Vaigach Island instead of returning to the icebreaker. Shortly after, contact with the helicopter was lost.

Rescuers found the crash site on the island, some 1,900 kilometers northeast of Moscow, on Tuesday afternoon. Initial investigation showed that engine failure caused the crash, Interfax said.
