Coke Sees Sales Drop

ATLANTA -- Coca-Cola Co., the world's largest soft drink maker, said it expects its worldwide sales to drop by up to 2 percent during the first quarter because of weaker demand in overseas markets.

The company said Monday that the biggest declines are expected in Latin America and Europe, where decreases of 4 percent to 5 percent are expected for the quarter versus the year-ago period. In the first quarter of 1998 the company reported a 14 percent increase in unit case volume worldwide.

The company expects increases of 2 percent in its North American group, but said the overall decline is symptomatic of the soured global economy.
