CIS Summit April 2

MOSCOW -- Boris Yeltsin has invited the leaders of 11 former Soviet republics to attend a summit of their alliance in the Russian capital early next month, officials said Friday.

The summit of the Commonwealth of the Independent States, originally planned for last fall, has been repeatedly postponed because of Yeltsin's steady string of illnesses.

The president checked out of the hospital Thursday after treatment for a bleeding ulcer. On Friday, his office announced he had set the summit date for April 2.

Leaders of the alliance will decide whether to endorse Yeltsin's unilateral decision to dismiss controversial business mogul Boris Berezovsky as the CIS executive secretary.
