Belarus Wants Security

MINSK, Belarus -- Foreign Minister Ural Latypov urged NATO to offer Belarus security guarantees now that the Western defense alliance has granted full membership to neighboring Poland.

He added that Belarus did not consider that the formal admission of Poland into NATO earlier this month would sour bilateral relations.

In 1994 Belarus vowed not to have nuclear weapons and by 1996 Russia withdrew its missiles from the former Soviet republic.

Belarus President Alexander Lukashenko has said NATO's expansion put a question mark over that decision. But, speaking on television Wednesday, Lukashenko said the withdrawal of nuclear weapons was irreversible.
