Baku Frees Cargo Plane

BAKU, Azerbaijan -- A Russian cargo plane detained in Baku earlier this month will be returned to Russia, an Azeri official confirmed Tuesday.

Customs officials impounded an An-124 cargo plane March 19, when it made a refueling stop and was found carrying six disassembled MiG-21 fighter jets.

A spokesman for Moscow Mayor Yury Luzhkov, who was visiting Baku, said Monday that President Heidar Aliyev had told him the plane could return. Vafa Guluzade, an adviser to Aliyev, said the MiGs and other arms would be kept for investigation.

The Azeri authorities had suspected the plane was headed for Yugoslavia, which is under an arms embargo. The crew said it was bound for North Korea.

Last week, the Kazakh government said that it was responsible for the cargo.
