Ukraine Sell-Off Plan

KIEV -- Ukrainian President Leonid Kuchma signed a 1999 state privatization plan Wednesday after agreeing to lawmakers' demands to remove a number of provisions, officials said.

The left-leaning parliament is now likely to approve the revised plan, Kuchma spokesman Oleksandr Martynenko said.

Under the 1999 privatization plan, the government plans to raise some 800 million hryvna ($228 million) by selling 455 large and medium enterprises and 5,500 small companies.

Last year, Ukraine raised 434.36 million hryvna ($124 million at the current rate) in privatization revenues, less than half of what had been projected.
