Restaurant Bites

Here and Now Almost There

The Here and Now tearoom is a promising development on the not exactly fertile soil of the Moscow cafe scene, but it is a long way from perfection. Located in Moscow's armpit at Kozhukhovskaya metro station, it offers a variety of teas and tea drinks at modest prices. Shops selling teas, new-age books and CDs are located on the premises.

The most exotic-sounding things on the menu are the various punches. I had the Chinese punch (plum wine, orange juice, rum and tea) for 60 rubles, which I still can't decide if I liked or not. You can also experience a Chinese tea ceremony for 100 rubles per person with a minimum of four people. They sell the standard variety of Russian pastries to go along with the beverages.

The cafe's wicker tables fill up fast, and on weekend nights people line up to get a seat. Evenings often feature live music, poetry readings and other events, some of which seem out of place. When we visited, we had to sit through an awful string ensemble playing saccharine versions of jazz standards.

Here and Now (Zdes i Seichas). Cover for concerts: 30 rubles ($1.30). 18 Yuzhnoportovaya Ulitsa, 279-4787/5584, 11:30 a.m. to 11 p.m., Metro: Kozhukhovskaya.
