Population Shrinks

MOSCOW -- Russia's population continued its steady decline in 1998, dropping by 401,000 people or 0.3 percent, the State Statistics Committee reported Thursday.

Deaths actually outnumbered births by a wider margin, but immigration compensated for some of the fall. The committee said 66 of Russia's 89 regions reported population declines.

Moscow, Russia's largest city, posted growth only because of migration into the city. The decline brought Russia's population to 146.3 million people, the committee said.
