Nuclear Waste Deal

KIEV -- Ukraine will resume sending nuclear waste to Russia after promising Krasnoyarsk region Governor Alexander Lebed to pay a higher price for the shipments, a top nuclear official said Friday.

Lebed had been blocking the shipments since December, even though the Nuclear Power Ministry had urged him to change his mind.

Ukraine agreed to pay $330 per kilogram of nuclear waste for deliveries in 1999, Nuclear Regulation Administration chief Oleksandr Smyshlyayev said.
