Japanese Boats Caught

MOSCOW -- Russian border guards expelled eight Japanese fishing boats from disputed waters around the Kuril Islands, a news agency reported Friday.

The incident on Thursday was the third such expulsion this year, and part of a long-running dispute between Russia and Japan over the islands, which Russia claimed at the end of World War II.

Itar-Tass reported that a Russian border patrol spotted the eight Japanese vessels in a gulf off Kunashir Island, whose southern tip lies just a few kilometers north of Japan's Hokkaido island.
