Inflation Pessimism

MOSCOW -- Russians share a pessimistic economic outlook, with 70 percent believing prices on all consumer goods will more than double by year's end, Interfax reported, citing a poll by the Public Opinion research center.

While only 10 percent of the respondents said they expect prices to double, 57 percent predicted that they will increase 200 percent to 400 percent, and 13 percent feared the increases would be even more drastic.

Some 16 percent of the 1,500 urban and rural residents surveyed Jan. 30 said prices will remain about the same.

The poll also found that 13 percent of Russians believe the ruble will fall to 30 to the dollar by December. Some 24 percent said the rate would be 30 rubles to 45 rubles to the dollar, and 21 percent thought the ruble would be even weaker.
