3 Girls Carved a Boy's Name on Arm

Three girls who jumped to their deaths together out of an eighth-story window each had a boy's name carved on her upper arm, investigators said.

The girls, ages 11, 12 and 14, died Monday night in the Moscow region town of Balashikha. They left a letter asking to be buried together, but gave no reason for the apparent suicides.

Balashikha regional investigator Vladimir Orekhovich said at a news conference Thursday that all three had a boy's name written on her arm.

He said they had "subjected themselves to injuries, with words, names." He did not say how they had etched the words on their arms, or whether all three had written the same name.

Russian television had suggested a possible religious motive, saying several religious groups had been active in the girls' neighborhood, but police said they had ruled out that connection.

Family members, neighbors, teachers and schoolmates said they hadn't noticed anything unusual in the girls' behavior.
