Soothing Voices

You can bet even the surliest of Aeroflot's stewardesses would have been grinning from ear to ear on the Day of the Smile if a singer from the fifthannual Jazz Voices-99 festival had boarded and ordered the chicken meal in an in toxicating, deep bass. The festival will feature the latest in vocal and instrumental jazz music, with musicians from nearly a dozen countries. The show begins at 7 p.m. Thursday at the National Youth Theater, located at 2 Teatralnaya Ploshchad. Metro: Teatralnaya. Tel. 292-0069.

Worthy Wooden Works

While pyromaniacs are personae non grata, those members of the art-loving public who haven't such a fondness for starting fires are welcome at "This Is Man," an exhibit of wooden worship dolls from the 18th and 19th centuries. On display at the Pushkin Gallery until Feb. 6. The museum is located at 8 Ulitsa Volkhonka. Metro: Kropotkinskaya. Tel. 202-2464.
