Village Loses Heat

MOSCOW -- Authorities declared a state of emergency in a village in Russia's Far East that lost heat and probably won't get it back until the end of the week, a news report said Wednesday.

About 400 people in the village of Okhotsk, a settlement of 8,000 weathering a typically harsh Russian winter, have gone without heat since Tuesday because municipal heating pipes have frozen, Itar-Tass said.

"It will take four to five days to resume heat supplies, provided emergency teams work around the clock," said Alexander Chekanovsky, an engineer with the regional government, according to Itar-Tass.
