Swedes Against Telenor

STOCKHOLM, Sweden -- Swedes want to disconnect a merger of their state-owned telecoms group Telia with Norway's Telenor that has exploded into a cross-border verbal war, an opinion poll showed Wednesday.

With Norwegian and Swedish government ministers meeting in Oslo on Wednesday for a third consecutive day of crisis talks to rescue the merger, 41 percent of Swedes said the deal should be abandoned.

A Gallup poll found only 21 percent of 1,000 interviewees wanted to continue with the $47 billion deal, which would create Europe's sixth largest telecoms operator.

Pressure to scrap the linkup between Telia and Telenor has mounted as an impasse persists over which of the two countries should house the merged group's lucrative mobile business.
