Stalin Leadership Poll

MOSCOW -- Nearly one-third of Russians consider Josef Stalin a cruel tyrant responsible for millions of deaths, while about one-fifth believe he was a wise leader who was good for the Soviet Union, a poll released Monday said.

The poll, conducted by the Public Opinion Fund, showed 32 percent of Russians saw Stalin as a despot, while the same number believed his leadership led to victory in World War II.

Eighteen percent of the respondents said Russia needs a strong leader of Stalin's type and believe such a figure will emerge "and restore order sooner or later," the poll said.

The poll was released on the eve of what would have been Stalin's 120th birthday.
