Partner Airlines Eyed

WASHINGTON -- The United States government was to propose Monday that all American airlines check foreign partner airlines for safety, airline industry sources said. .TX .- They said the proposal, to be announced by U.S. Transportation Secretary Rodney Slater, was virtually identical to a voluntary program agreed to by six U.S. carriers earlier this year with the Department of Defense.

Under the increasingly common practice of code sharing, where airlines sell tickets on each other's flights using their own identifying code, a ticket written by a U.S. carrier may involve a flight on a foreign airline.

In the September 1998 crash of SwissAir Flight 111 off the east coast of Canada that killed all 229 people on board, 53 of the passengers had purchased tickets on the plane as Delta Air Lines Flight 111.
