Oil Spills in Black Sea

MOSCOW -- t least 10 metric tons of oil spilled into the Black Sea after a Syrian ship rammed into a Russian oil terminal during a heavy storm, news reports said Monday.

The oil slick has spread over a 800-square-meter area since the Sunday accident near the port of Novorossiisk, the Emergency Situations Ministry said, according to Itar-Tass.

No injuries were reported.

An emergency crew was sent to the scene, but cleanup work could not begin Monday because of the storm, Itar-Tass said. The damaged pipeline at the terminal has been sealed, and Novorossiisk, which handles 25 percent of Russia's oil exports, has resumed operation, Itar-Tass and Interfax reported.
