Deputy to Run Bank

KIEV -- Ukrainian President Leonid Kuchma has appointed Volodymyr Stelmakh, first deputy National Bank chairman, as acting head of the bank, the presidential press service reported Saturday.

The post became vacant after National Bank chairman Viktor Yushchenko was confirmed as Ukraine's new prime minister earlier in the week. The 60-year-old Stelmakh, an economist, has had a long career in banking in the former Soviet Union and independent Ukraine, and served as an adviser to Cuba's chief banker from 1981 to 1986.
