Abducted Guards Freed

MOSCOW -- Two abducted Russian border guards have been released after nearly nine months of captivity in breakaway Chechnya, Itar-Tass reported Monday.

Lieutenant Colonel Vadim Altukhov and Lieutenant Vitaly Bruyako were released Sunday and immediately hospitalized, the news agency said, without giving any details about their health.

Altukhov and Bruyako, who had been stationed in the southern region of Ingushetia, were seized March 14 and taken to neighboring Chechnya, where Russian forces have been battling Islamic insurgents since late August.

In another, unrelated hostage case, the son of a wealthy Moscow businessman was freed from kidnappers in the Tver region just north of Moscow, Itar-Tass reported Monday. Alexei Mostobayev went free after part of the ransom demanded for his release was paid.
