2nd Trial for Ocalan

ANKARA, Turkey -- Kurdish rebel leader Abdullah Ocalan, already condemned by a Turkish court to hang for treason, went on trial again Wednesday on new charges that could lead to a second death sentence, a defense lawyer said.

An Ankara criminal court began hearing a case against Ocalan and 100 other guerrillas for crimes allegedly committed in the 1970s in southeastern Turkey, the lawyer said. Ocalan, held in a high security island jail, was not present.

Last month, an appeals court upheld the death sentence on Ocalan, imposed in June for his leadership of the Kurdistan Workers Party during 15 years of violent conflict aimed at securing self rule for Turkey's mainly Kurdish southeast.
