The popular World Class fitness club, a favorite hangout of Moscow celebrities, recently held is first-ever awards ceremony to recognize the achievements of its star-studded clientele and its top staff.

Showman Igor Vernik, who hosted the evening without ever losing his trademark smile, cracked wise as he handed out the awards late last week to 17 clients and staff at the Yar restaurant.

The awards - silver torsos with a decidedly male face but somewhat feminine body - were presented to clients for achievements such as making the most progress shaping up and being the fittest child. Staff were awarded in catagories such as best instructor and director of the most popular fitness program.

Music video director Fyodor Bondarchuk was named the club's most fashionable member. After accepting the prize, he, together with director Stepan Mikhalkov, his friend and partner from the studio Art-Pictures, tried to throw Vernik off the stage.

Vernik himself won an award for having the best smile, but he red-facedly admitted that he has never used the club despite the fact that he has held a membership card since it opened in 1993. Vernik swore - to the friendly laughter of the audience - that he would visit the club next year.

On hand to congratulate the winners was the always stunning Olga Slutsker, president of World Class.

Actress and singer Alika Smekhova, featured on the cover of Playboy's November issue, turned out wearing a provocative, shimmering gold dress, and pop singer Alyona Sviridova came in a leather top and long skirt. Sviridova will be on the cover of Playboy's December issue.

Favorite Russian performers Valery Meladze, A-Studio, Lada-Dance and Igor Nikolayev played their hits between the award presentations.

The evening really starting rocking, though, when pretty-boy pop trio Ivanushki International took the stage. Even Slutsker, seated during dinner between Igor Grigoryev, founder and former editor of the Amadeus, Imperial and OM magazines, and Bondarchuk, who is also the son of the legendary director of "War and Peace" Sergei Bondarchuk, could not keep still, jumping up to dance with Vernik.

At the beginning of the ceremony, Vernik told guests they had to come up with a name for the award itself, and several members of the audience immediately cried out that it should be called the Silver Vernik.

However, by the end of the evening of music and laughter the guests unanimously agreed that the award must be called the Silver Slutsker.
