WTO Admits Estonia

GENEVA -- The former Soviet Baltic republic of Estonia, independent since 1991, became the 135th member of the World Trade Organization over the weekend, officials said Monday.

This followed the expiration of a regulation 30-day period since Estonia notified the WTO that it had completed ratification of the accession package that it had negotiated with member countries.

Diplomats say they believe it will be some years before Russia joins the organization.
