WHATEVER HAPPENED TO . . .: Homeless Galina?

Remember the tragic story told by Galina Khodoshina, a homeless mother of four, that appeared last December in the Insight section of The Moscow Times?

Khodoshina, 37, lost her Moscow apartment in a real estate scam and had been wandering penniless around Russia since 1995.

Her narrative touched the heart of a Moscow Times reader who rented a three-room apartment in Moscow for her and her family.

The Center for Humanitarian Aid, which provides food and clothing to Moscow's homeless, gave Khodoshina a job, and a sponsor from England sent her $35 a month.

The family moved in late September into their very own three-room house in Ryazhsk, a small town south of Ryazan, courtesy of the Moscow Times reader.

Khodoshina says she is making the place a home for herself and her children - Zhenya, 17, Marina, 11, Dasha, 5 and Sasha, who will turn 2 next February. The home has a large yard with chickens and goats.

Zhenya and Marina are back in school. Having missed classes while the family lived on the streets, Marina is in the third grade, two years behind her peers. Zhenya is making up his mind whether he will attend a secondary school or a vocational school. He is interested becoming a mechanic or a tractor driver.

Khodoshina is looking for a job. "We are only settling down," she said. "But the main thing is that we've got a roof over our heads."
