Strike in Far East

MOSCOW -- A strike by power plant workers in an eastern Russian city has left maternity hospitals with little heating, while some schools and apartments are going with no heat at all, a news report said Monday.

Temperatures in two maternity wards in Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky dropped to 10 degrees Celsius, Itar-Tass said. It said doctors soaked their hands in hot water before handling newborns.

The report said workers at a plant that heats the city are protesting six months of wage arrears.
