Russia: Too Little Aid

MOSCOW -- Deputy Prime Minister Valentina Matvienko accused Western countries Tuesday of failing to back their concern for the plight of Chechen refugees with any substantial amount of humanitarian aid.

"So far, it is essentially promises of humanitarian aid that we hear," Matvienko, who oversees social issues in the government, told a news conference.

She said Germany, the European Union and the United Nations had sent small amounts of aid but it fell well short of what one could expect from leaders worried about a "humanitarian catastrophe" in areas flooded with refugees.

"The volume of aid is insignificant. It does not correspond with the notion of humanitarian catastrophe as they [Western leaders] see it," she said. Matvienko did not give figures.
