Russia to Pay Damages

ALMATY, Kazakhstan -- Russia will pay Kazakhstan $400,000 in damages following last month's crash of a Proton rocket shortly after takeoff from the Baikonur launching site, Interfax reported Friday. The two sides worked out the compensation deal in talks Thursday.

The Oct. 27 crash was the second failure of a Proton rocket launch in Kazakhstan in less than four months. Russia paid Kazakhstan $270,000 following a similar mishap July 5.

Kazakhstan had placed a moratorium on all rocket launches following the second crash. But Thursday, it agreed that launches could be resumed for all rocket types except the Proton.
