Repsol Merger Unclear

MADRID, Spain -- Spanish oil giant Repsol kept investors guessing about its possible merger plans on Friday, cancelling a board meeting which had been widely expected to discuss a tie-up with electrical utility Iberdrola.

Endesa, Spain's biggest electricity company and Iberdrola's arch-rival, was reported to be planning to oppose the possible deal through its partner, savings bank La Caixa, which has a major stake in Repsol.

Repsol said Thursday it was considering several alternatives for growth including a possible tie-up with Iberdrola, a move which was seen as positive by analysts.
